Collective action, power, and organizing is sexy. It always has been and always will be. Fighting for systemic change is a love language that lasts generations.
This poster is a call to collective action– to boycott, divest, sanction and mobilize (BDSM). It was inspired by Emmanuel Ortiz’s poetry at Café Southside for the Palabristas Erotic Poetry Open Mic in 2016. It is more important than ever to boycott Israel for their war crimes, apartheid, colonization, and genocide in Palestine. Boycotts have been used successfully around the world by the civil rights movement in the U.S., organized labor around the world, South Africa’s fight against apartheid, and India’s resistance to British colonization and free-trade dogma.
Boycotts are used around the world to divest from the powerful elite who hoard resources and power. Boycotts represent collective power and protests to necropolitics and deathworlds. Individual divestments have limited impact but collective divestments can bring the most powerful to their knees. The term Boycott entered the English language when an English land agent named Captain Charles Boycott, who lived in County Mayo, Ireland attempted to collect rent and evict his tenants who were starving after a poor harvest. His workers decided to collectively shun him. They stopped working in his fields, stables, house, and eventually no one would trade with him or even deliver his mail. This social ostracization effectively ended his ability to exploit peasants and thereby became known as a Boycott. Eiko’s Irish ancestors are from county Mayo in Ireland and are a part of a long-lineage of resistance against British colonial rule. Join the movement! Boycott, divest, sanction, and mobilize! BDSM!
